Community groups across the region are continuing to make a real difference through a wide range of greening projects, helping to brighten stations, support wildlife and create more welcoming spaces for passengers and local residents.

New Planters Installed in Disley After Vandalism

In Disley, work is underway to replace vandalised planters with a combination of wooden and recycled plastic alternatives. The new planters will improve the appearance of the station and also provide a more durable and sustainable solution for future planting projects. Disley Station Friends have been working hard to ensure the station remains an attractive and colourful space throughout the year.

New Mills Men’s Shed Supports Station Improvements

New Mills has also seen exciting progress, with the installation of a new toolshed to support volunteers in maintaining the station and surrounding areas. Alongside this, three large new planters have been added, all build by New Mills Men’s Shed. The partnership highlights the strong community spirit behind many of these projects, bringing together local groups to improve shared public spaces.

New Tree Planting Brings Greener Future to Buxton

Buxton Station Friends have celebrated a major tree planting project on the former DBS Cargo land. The work will help transform the area into a greener environment that benefits both wildlife and the wider community. Seed sowing has also taken place, laying the groundwork for future planting and creating opportunities for even more biodiversity in the years ahead.

Elsewhere, groups are looking forward to seeing the results of planting efforts already completed. In Grindleford, around 300 bulbs planted last autumn are expected to bloom this spring, bringing much needed colour to the station after the winter months. Hathersage and Whaley Bridge are also keen to build on recent successes, with plans to expand planting schemes and further improve biodiversity around their stations.

As interest in environmentally friendly projects continues to grow, several groups are now exploring Northern’s Wildlife Friendly Stations certification. The scheme recognises stations that actively support nature through planting, habitat creation and sustainable maintenance, and reflects the dedication of volunteers working to make stations greener and more enjoyable places for everyone.
