Celebrate the festive season in the Peak District

Derbyshire and the Peak District are home to unique festive traditions. Here’s our roundup of the best seasonal things to do, by train.

Admire Christmas Trees in Hope Valley

Hop on the train to Hope and then take the 272 bus a short distance to Castleton, a village which is steeped in Christmas traditions. The well-loved Christmas Tree Festival takes place from 18 November-17 December 2023 in St Edmund’s Church, and the streets and shop windows are beautifully dressed with lights (shown in the photo above).

Christmas Carol Concerts take place in Peak Cavern every year, with local brass bands leading a mix of traditional and contemporary music in the fantastic atmosphere of an underground cavern! Please note, all the carol concerts have sold out for 2023 – early booking is recommended for next year.
Sample local pudding and pantomime in Buxton

Tis the season to indulge in some sweet treats, including the delicious Buxton Pudding. Similar to a Bakewell pudding but topped with sponge and breadcrumbs, the Buxton Pudding Emporium is a great place to find this treat. Buxton is a great place to find independent bakeries, deli counters and food stores from butchers to cheesemongers, so if you’re a foodie leave time to explore!

You could also head to Buxton’s beautiful Opera House to enjoy a family-friendly favourite pantomime.

Spot snow on the hilltops

The beautiful hills of High Peak and Hope Valley look magical with a dusting of snow. Step inside a scene from a Christmas card when you make a scenic train journey through the frosty landscape. Find out more about the Buxton, Glossop and Hope Valley lines here: Railway Line Guides
Find locally sourced gifts

High Peak and Hope Valley are home to thriving communities of makers and artists. A visit to a craft fair or winter market is the perfect opportunity to find unique, handmade gifts from the Peak District. A few of our favourites are:

Buxton Dickensian Market (Saturday 25 November at the Pavilion Gardens)
Makers at the Mill (Sunday 3 December at Torr Vale Mills, New Mills)
– Old Glossop Christmas Market (Sunday 3 December in Glossop)
– Buxton Christmas Market (Saturday 9 December-Sunday 10 December at the Pavilion Gardens)
