School’s out! We’ve put together some ideas of things to do with the family this half term, accessible by rail.

Don’t forget that children aged 5 – 15 travel for half-price on the majority of Northern routes this half term, and under 5s travel for free alongside fare-paying passengers. Visit Northern‘s website to find out more.

Buxton

Visit the Pavilion Gardens to let off steam in the adventure playground, pop into the cafe and gardens or take a ride on the miniature train, which runs at weekends and during the school holidays. You’ll also find Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, Poole’s Cavern and Buxton Country Park are great for visits with children. Find out more: Home | Visit Buxton

Disley

Explore National Trust Lyme Park, a 15 minute walk from Disley station, where family activities this half term include Build Your Own Story, Skylarks Forest School and Weaving Workshops. Or, stroll along the Gritstone Trail before visiting the cafes and pubs in Disley.

Dore and Totley

Ecclesall Woods are popular for family walks, with access to the woods directly opposite the station. Call in at the Woodland Coffee Stop or head to Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, a free open-air museum where children can be immersed in the world of Sheffield’s industrial heritage.
Hathersage

A short train ride from Sheffield, Hathersage is a bustling village with plenty of family-friendly walks to enjoy. There are cafes to suit everyone’s taste and plenty of outdoor shops to get your little ones kitted out. Hathersage’s most famous and unusual attraction is its outdoor heated swimming pool, with family sessions throughout the day during half term.
